We went to Skopje Fortress aka Kale Fortress which was first built in the 6th century. The view from the fortress wall was amazing. After that, we went back to the Kapan Han caravanserai to feed the cats we met yesterday. The place looks even more mystical at night.
At the grocery store, the wine was locked in a glass cabinet. Kenric asked one of the employees for help, and she grabbed a set of keys. As we were standing in line, she and another employee hurried towards us and wanted the wine back. The lady had an apologetic look on her face, and the guy said, “We cannot sell you wine after seven.” Kenric apologized and gave the bottles back to them.
I followed the guy to find out more about this law. He said in the summer, stores can sell alcohol until 9:00 pm, but in the winter, only until 7:00. The law is to prevent drunk driving, but it doesn’t apply to restaurants or bars. I asked when people can start purchasing alcohol during the day. “When we open. At 8:00.” I’m not sure if he answered that way because he thought I was asking specifically about his store.
Kenric assured me we have some wine at home. I shouldn’t have put so much of it in our spaghetti sauce this afternoon!
Update: The restriction on alcohol sales in North Macedonia may have changed in 2018. See here: https://balkaninsight.com/2018/06/01/macedonia-to-lift-liquor-selling-curfew-05-30-2018/
