After a truly aggravating 2.5-hour train ride from Hoi An to Hue, our luck changed when I came across an online recommendation for Le Hanh. The restaurant is only a few minutes walk away from our hotel. We wanted to share the tasting menu and another item. When I asked the waitress if Banh Nam or Banh Loc was better, she said she would split the order half/half for us. Thank goodness for the first nice person we encountered today.
Banh Nam – Rice flour with meat and shrimp steamed in banana leaf.
Banh Loc – Tapioca flour with shrimp steamed in banana leaf.
The star of the tasting menu was Banh Beo. It was so very delicious that we added a full order. Each order has sixteen little dishes to slurp from. We’ll definitely be back, but before that, we need to try Hue’s world-famous Spicy Beef Noodles – Bun Bo Hue!
Bahn Beo – Rice flour cakes topped with shrimp, fried onion and pork cracklings. So very delicious.
Tasting Menu for One. Clockwise: 1. Nem Lui – Grilled meat held by lemongrass. 2. Nem Ran – Fried Spring Roll 3. This item was not listed on the menu. It’s like a soft spring roll 4. Bahn Beo – Rice flour cakes topped with shrimp, fried onion and pork cracklings. So very delicious. 5. Banh Khoai – Crispy pancakes with quail eggs, sausage, shrimp and bean sprouts. Most of these items are to be wrapped along with lettuce and herbs in the rice paper provided. All the sauces were good, but I did not like the peanut sauce because there was liver in it.
