A few days ago, Kenric and I decided we’ll return to Eastern Europe in late September. For now, we know we’ll visit Belgrade in Serbia; Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kotor in Montenegro. You may recall when we were in Kotor last year, we met a cat that was really sick which we named Waxy because her eyes were almost sealed shut by eye wax. We got her spayed, gave her antibiotics and flea shots, and the Vet pulled out her last remaining rotten tooth. Because we wanted to be there during her recovery, we extended our stay in Kotor by 10 days. We would have stayed longer but the Airbnb apartment was booked, so we left the day before the next guest was supposed to check in. Waxy was looking much healthier by then.
I was watching a YouTube video of Kotor this afternoon done by travel bloggers Samuel and Audrey. At the eleventh minute, the video cut to a “Cat Intermission”. They were filming at the bottom of the stairs that lead to our Airbnb, and they mentioned that their Airbnb is at the top of the stairs. OMG, these must be the people who checked in right after us!
He calls Waxy “Sausage Cat”
Then, they showed the cats. The second cat they showed was Kelly Koh; she’s the princess. Then, Waxy came on screen. I got all verklempt and it felt like my heart was going to burst. She was sitting outside the door where I often found her. Audrey was petting Waxy, and her husband said that of all the cats there that they feed, “Sausage Cat” is the sweetest. He calls Waxy “Sausage Cat” because of her deformed short legs. They also refer to her as a “he”. Samuel used the word “sweetest” multiple times to describe Waxy. Don’t believe me just watch – from the 11th minute of the attached video. The video was probably filmed four or five days after we left because the couple said it had been raining for days when they first arrived.
I think about Waxy every day, and I worry about her more than I do our Oscar because I know Oscar is in good hands. I have been worried that she might not be there when we go back later this year. To have stumbled upon the video, to be able to get a glimpse of her after we left, to see her even healthier than when we left her, and to know that the people who checked in after us continued to feed the cats is extremely comforting to us. I’d like to think this is Waxy’s way of telling us she’ll be there waiting for us later this year. I love you, Waxy. You’re a YouTube star named Sausage Cat!
To watch Waxy’s debut, check out the YouTube video below. The video is well done, but to get to the “Cat Intermission”, skip to 11:00.
