Currently, the extended lockdown in Greece is scheduled to end on April 27th. We are cautiously optimistic. Kenric and I prefer to self-quarantine for 14 days each time we go out. Today, April 13th, is the last we can go out to give us 14 days until the 27th. So, Kenric went out for groceries.
Some of you have asked why we are self-quarantining for 14 days every time Kenric goes out. This quarantine time should give any newly contracted virus enough time to manifest, or degenerate (if we’re one of those asymptomatic people). We’re quite paranoid about unknowingly getting others sick. We definitely do not want to get sick here because we don’t know how to navigate the healthcare system and we don’t want to add burden to it.
Also, we’ve been told by the US State Department that we’ll be pretty much on our own if we get into any sort of trouble. When we registered our arrival with the US State Department, the email reply says the Consulate will only be able to assist with minor routine stuff. When the Level-4 Travel Warning was issued last month, the State Department warned that people who are not going back to the US immediately should be prepared to stay wherever they are indefinitely. So, we really don’t want to get the Coronavirus besides the obvious reasons.
Today also happened to be our 30th day in Athens. To mark the occasion Kenric went to Garyfallo Kanela (Γαρύφαλλο Κανέλα), the restaurant our Airbnb host strongly recommended, to get takeout. The restaurant, like all others still open, is open for takeout only. Kenric got six of the nine or ten pre-made dishes. The food was so delicious. I don’t think the leftovers will last as long as Kenric intended, but this place is only a block away, but “14-day quarantine”! Ugh.
We’ve been in this apartment for 27 days. I have not been out at all for 25; the drummer downstairs kept us up or woke us up about 14 nights; we’ve managed to entice three neighborhood cats to come eat the meat or little sausages we toss from our first-floor window; and yesterday, an old lady from upstairs chatted with me from her balcony while I was on our bedroom balcony. I doubt she could see our bed, but I made the bed yesterday and today just in case which killed two extra minutes each day! We hope you are staying sane, safe and healthy.
EDIT: It’s 1:05 a.m. and the drummer just started playing.
