The Malaysian state of Sarawak has many indigenous groups. Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Melanau are some of the biggest groups. Today, we went to the Sarawak Cultural Village to check out the different groups’ homes, crafts and clothing. My favorite activity was the 45-minute cultural performance. I’ll post more photos and videos later.
This dance features an Orang Ulu hunting with his blow dart. More importantly, I hope you enjoy the music. The performer used an electric sape/sapeh (like a guitar) instead of the “traditional” version.
More great stuff from the Sarawak Cultural Village performance showcasing dances from different indigenous groups in Sarawak. Both video clips show the same dance called Alu-Alu. It is performed during a Melanau funeral to cheer the guests up. With amazing dances like this, we may have to consider crashing Melanau funerals.
