Today, we went to The ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization. It is a huge open air museum. They have 400 exhibits that show how the different people from the different regions in Romania lived, and the traditional tools they used, such as water mills, windmills, oil presses, etc.
The museum is open, but the exhibits are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Since we leave tomorrow, we went today (Tuesday). We could only walk around the area, but we couldn’t enter the homes to see the demonstrations on how to make things like candles, pottery, straw baskets, etc.
My favorite is this beautiful blue house. The wooden beams that jut out, the shingles, the little wooden bench, the vivid blue paint contrasted with the pink flowers; this is a sight I will never forget. The best part is: it comes with kitties. We spent a lot of time here taking pictures of the cats, but the two shy ones were hiding behind the flowers. When we finally moved on to the next house, there were chickens!
When I was young, one of my duties was to chop up vegetables that we either bought for very cheap, or were given to us by the vegetable sellers because the leaves were too bruised to be sold. I had to mix in some grain, and soak them in water for a few minutes before scooping them out for the chickens. I was literally making chicken feed, as the saying goes. Then, I started school, got an education, and with that, a slightly better paying job.
