I cannot stop thinking about the cats in Kotor, Montenegro especially Kelly Koh. I am so worried that she’s been poisoned by that evil man because she kept crying for her babies. While I keep thinking about the cruelty that happened, I have to keep reminding myself of the kindness I’ve seen. Other than the nice couple on the third floor, the cat-loving tourists, and the kind-hearted husband-and-wife vets, we were lucky to have met some kind residents.
During our two visits, we’ve dined at the restaurant Konoba Scala Santa five times. The food was always great, and Momo (the server) and the Manager were always friendly. On our last two visits, we were seated outside and saw how nice they were to the cats. When one of the cats meowed at the Manager, he accompanied the cat to the public water tap nearby, turned it on and waited for the cat to drink. When he had to step away to attend to something, Momo stepped in and turned on the tap for the kitty. It was a small comfort on our final night given what had happened.
Of course, the person who’s made the biggest impact is the owner of Kotor’s Cats, a handmade souvenir shop. She’s been helping the abandoned cats for more than 25 years. I wrote about how we came to know her last week. I am so thankful that she was willing to take Kelly Koh’s only surviving baby in and found him a forever home. Instead of helping only the one or two we are able to catch, I am exploring ways to help the kitties in a more meaningful way when we return to Kotor in late November.
The other thing that’s constantly on my mind is what’s happening in America under the current administration. Please vote in the upcoming midterm election if you are eligible to do so. Vote. Vote like the well-being of billions of people around the world depend on it; like millions of Americans depend on it because they do. Vote.
