Yesterday evening, we were very lucky to have stumbled upon the annual Inthakin Festival at Chedi Luang Temple. During this eight-day celebration, the people of Chiang Mai come to honor the city pillar, Inthakin. They ask for it to provide continued blessings upon the city. The pillar was first erected in 1296 at the founding of the city, and was moved to this location in 1800.
People bring flowers, and burn candles and incense as offerings. We didn’t enter the main prayer hall because we didn’t want to get in the locals’ way while they were praying. After reading about this festival online, we realized yesterday was the first day of the eight day celebration. That’s why there were so many people. If we go back in the next few days and if it’s less busy, we will check out the prayer hall. As for the pillar, it is in a special shrine that only men can enter. If Kenric goes in and if photography is allowed, I’ll post a photo of the pillar.
