The Alaska Highway actually starts in Dawson CREEK (Mile 0) in British Columbia, Canada, and ends in Delta Junction in Alaska, USA (Mile 1422). We didn’t drive the entire 1,422 miles because we took the Klondike Highway to Dawson CITY, Yukon, and then, the Top of the World Highway into Alaska.
In the past week or so, you might have heard about the young couple who were killed along the Alaska Highway. We drove through Liard Hot Springs four days before their bodies were discovered there. Since then, the now-identified suspects (two males, 18 and 19) have killed another man in his 60s. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police believe the suspects are in the remote town of Gillam in a swampy part of Manitoba.
From what I’ve read, the young couple, (Chynna Deese, American, 24, and Lucas Fowler, Australian, 23) first met in a hostel in Croatia. He had found a job at a ranch in British Columbia so she was visiting him there from the US. They were only one day into their three-week road trip to visit national parks when their 1986 Chevrolet camper van broke down making them easy targets for the two monsters.
Kenric and I dedicate these photos taken along the Alaska Highway to the young travelers whose lives and journey were cut short so senselessly. These are some of the sights and wildlife they would have seen, and could have seen had they continued along the beautiful Alaska Highway.
