In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces massacred more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica within a few days. Ratko Mladic, “The Butcher Of Bosnia”, was finally convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity in 2017.
Years of effort searching through uncountable mass graves yielded whole and partial bodies of the victims which have been reburied at a cemetery in Potocari, outside of Srebrenica.
Tomorrow, Saturday, July 11th, 2020, on the 25th anniversary/commemoration, eight more victims will be laid to rest.
Kenric and I visited the Srebrenica Memorial in 2017. Our guide, Arna, is now our very dear friend. The visit there and speaking to a survivor, Hasan Hasanović, made us want to be better humans. In honor of the many victims, and the many more survivors who are still searching for the remains of their loved ones, please remember that Srebrenica was a genocide and it did happen.
