We went to a place by the Mekong River for dinner. We had grilled prawns, fried whole fish in spicy “source” and mixed vegetable stir fry. Three dishes and two large bottles of Beerlao came to 215,000 Kip (USD $25.93). I ordered the mosquitoes to go, but they didn’t. Kenric said that was the best fish he’s had on this trip. I gave a kitty some fish but was hesitant to give her the entire fish head because Kenric said she wouldn’t be able to finish it and it would leave a mess for the staff. Thankfully, a dog came and she looked like she likes fish heads. She did!
A 7-Year-Old Selling Lotus Seeds
Other than buying tissue packets from blind people led by a guide from table to table in Malaysia, we’ve been shaking our heads whenever someone comes to our table to sell us things. Out of habit, I shook my head when a little girl around seven years old tried to sell us a bouquet of lotus seed pods/heads. She turned and left, and I regretted shaking my head without really considering what she was selling. I’m sure her family could use the money especially since New Year (Songkran / Pi Mai) is only two days away, and Kenric has never seen or eaten raw lotus seeds. It would have been a win-win, but we’ve trained ourselves so well to immediately refuse all solicitations.
