Almost right after we turned off the lights last night, we heard noises coming from the kitchen. We knew instantly it was rats trying to get into plastic bags. Kenric went out to put everything in the cupboard and saw that a plum was already bitten into. He threw it into the trash. Shudder
Lights off again. They started crawling around the bags of snacks that the Airbnb host put out for sale. Kenric looked around and saw that the rat had chewed through the bag of a chocolate croissant. He put all the snacks into the cupboard too. Shudder
Lights off again. One rat came into the bathroom in the bedroom and tried to get into the trash can. When Kenric turned the light on it ran out of the bedroom, so he quickly closed the bedroom door. Shudder
Rats under the bed
Lights off again. One rat came into the bathroom in the bedroom and tried to get into the trash can. When Kenric turned the light on it ran out of the bedroom, so he quickly closed the bedroom door. Shudder
Lights off again. That’s when we realized there’s another one under the bed. I was so freaked out. It started scurrying around. With the door closed, we realized the smell in the room is from the rats’ poop and pee. Then, the rat started to look around in our things. We opened the door and it ran out. Shudder
Feed the rats to keep them quiet
Lights off again. Both of them were running around on the counter making metal-clinking sounds as they walked over the washed cutlery I laid out on a towel to dry. They actually pushed around things like the jar of flour on the counter, and knocked over an empty beer can. Kenric turned on the light and saw that they had been eating the bar of soap at the kitchen sink. Shudder
Lights off again. For about one whole hour, they were making so much noise trying to get into everything that we decided that Kenric should take that plum out of the trash and put it in the kitchen sink for them. We had to feed them so they would stop digging into our bags. Shudder
How soon can we check into a hotel room?
At around 5:00 am Kenric called a 24-hour-front-desk hotel and woke some poor girl up only to find out they have no rooms. He waited until 6:45 to call another hotel that says their front desk is available at 6:30. We woke another poor guy up. They have a room for us but check-in is at 1:00 pm.
The sun came up and the rats were a little quieter and we dozed off for the first time. Some time later, we heard one of them trying to get into the bathroom trash can again. We sat up in bed and saw the biggest rat we’ve seen. Kenric thinks it was as big as a cat. I screamed and it started running towards the bed. I screamed even louder. #&%?!! Why the hell did it run under the bed instead of out of the room? It was after 10:00 am so we started packing. The entire plum in the sink was gone. Kenric checked that it didn’t just roll into the drain. Nope, the rats actually carried the plum away. Shudder
Another Unwelcome Guest
We took all our stuff out of the bedroom and locked the rat inside. We planned to leave as soon as possible and send the host a message later. When we were almost done packing the doorbell rang. “Shit! It’s him!” As we were debating what to do, he opened the door and started walking up the stairs!! I was so afraid not knowing how things would turn out.
Kenric did a really good job conveying his anger calmly. The host kept saying he’s speechless and he just couldn’t believe there are rats there but he believed us. We’re pretty sure he knew there’s a rat problem in the house all along. His acting, overacting, was lousy. He apologized many times. He insisted on helping us carry our bags, so finally, Kenric let him carry one.
“Please don’t write a review”
He wanted to know where we’ll be staying and of course, he begged Kenric not to write a review and said he would give us a refund. This afternoon, he sent a message providing updates on the trapping of the rats. Later tonight, his sister who lives in the US who is the owner of the house, wrote that her brother will be staying at the house for three nights to trap the rats and that we can return to the house once her brother declares it safe. SERIOUSLY??!!
I’ve had a pounding headache all day long and have started pronouncing Berat as “Be Rat”.
