We went to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Sibiu, Romania today. It is an Eastern Orthodox Church. So now, I have now seen at least one church from all three of the main Christian groups – Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox.
The very elaborate and beautiful paintings on the wall and ceiling are called “Icons”. I really like this style of painting. Had I known more about Orthodox Christianity, I would have visited the Holy Virgin Cathedral on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco; just two blocks from Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant. I would visit before the tequila, of course.
A few other things I learned about the Eastern Orthodox Church are:
- It split from Rome after the Great Schism in 1054.
- It was heavily influenced by Greek, Russian, Middle-Eastern, and Slav culture.
- Its calendar runs from September 1st to August 31st.
- Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7th.
- While Christmas is the most important day for “Western Christians”, the most important day for “Eastern Christians” is Easter.
