The snow forecast for Belgrade was off by about 19 hours, but the snow flurries finally came around 3:00 pm. It was bitterly cold (34° Fahrenheit / 1° Celsius) when we were at the Christmas markets. Yes, Christmas markets are still thriving here in Belgrade because the Orthodox Christmas hasn’t arrived yet.
Catholics and Protestant Christians, like much of the world, use the Gregorian calendar, and celebrate Christmas on December 25th. Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar, mainly for religious purposes. They also celebrate Christmas on December 25th, but it’s the December 25th of the Julian calendar; and that day coincides with January 7th on our regular/Gregorian calendar.
So, after celebrating a very much Catholic Christmas in Croatia, we now get to enjoy the Orthodox Christmas festivities in Serbia. Maybe we’ll get to really enjoy ourselves if we wear two more layers. I’m seriously considering wearing two pairs of jeans because the wind is so brutal.
