Kenric and I made it to Sioux Falls, and safely delivered Grandma’s belongings that she couldn’t entrust to the movers. Grandma’s independent-living apartment in the retirement community is really nice. The entire facility is really nice and Grandma said everyone on staff is very attentive. When we exited the elevator, there were four ladies playing cards in the common area.
There are many onsite events and outings in which residents can participate. Yesterday, Grandma went to chair exercise in the morning and a concert in the evening. She went back to her apartment halfway through the concert because it was just too loud for her. She had her hearing aid in and was seated in the second row. Kenric’s uncle half-jokingly said that she should go earlier next time to get a seat in the back.
Grandma made dessert – dump cake, of course. It was delicious! Her kitchen is actually bigger than the one in Redlands. The apartment is spacious and felt familiar; the only piece of new furniture is the couch. The view from her balcony was rather serene. The sliding glass door and screen door to the balcony reminded me of my college apartments in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Grandma is settling in nicely and even befriended a couple from nearby Hurley where she grew up. She actually liked a few items served in the dining room that does not cook with salt. Congratulations on your new home, Grandma!
Tonight, we get free accommodation at Kenric’s Aunt and Uncle’s house. Tomorrow, we will start making our way to Kalamazoo for a very brief stop.
