A Cold Afternoon at Tivoli Park
We spent the afternoon at Tivoli Park. It was very cold. There were very few people there. We saw a kid stop to chat with a man feeding ducks, swans, birds and pigeons. The boy was quite happy when the man gave him some bread to throw into the pond. We saw the man again at another part of the park. He must be a regular because the birds ate out of his hand. We visited the greenhouse in the park. One side is the Abandoned Plants Sanctuary, and the other houses tropical plants and one very interesting cactus.
For you, I recommend …
We’ve been having our main meal at around 4:30 pm. This evening, at Sestica, before we even got seated, the waiter said, “I recommend the mushroom soup and veal, but you sit and you look. What you want to drink?” Within 30 seconds, “This is bread and this is pumpkin oil. Ready to order?” “Sorry, not yet.” Within two minutes, “Not ready? For you, I recommend the Farmer’s Plate, and for you, the Veal Medallion! These are traditional Slovenian dishes. Mushroom soup?!”
The soup and entrees were really tasty. Once we started eating, he came and recommended something for dessert and said he would put that order in and his coworker would bring it later because he’s going home. It was 5:00 pm; his shift had just ended. Ahh…that explained why he was so pushy. I said we would pay then. He refused and said he didn’t want to rush us (a little late for that!) and he’ll just wait for us.
I felt so bad that this 60-something-year-old man is staying late at work because of us. A few minutes later we told him again that it was really fine to pay then. He relented, recommended another round of wine, and brought the bill. Have a good evening, Mister.
This reminded us of a highly recommended restaurant we dined at in Pristina, Kosovo. When we walked in, all the waiters were having dinner at a big table. One of them turned around and pointed at a table, and told us to go sit there. When he was done with his dinner, he brought the menus. In America, that would be a cardinal sin. It really didn’t bother us that there was not an over-emphasis on customer service. We prefer casual.
