We spent the day at Apollonia Archaeological Park, about 1.5 hours from Berat. Around 4:00 pm, we went to the animal hospital in Fier to visit Tiga-Empat and to settle his vet bill. You may recall he’s the puppy we found on the streets of Berat; he had a really deep cut in his infected left hind paw. That was October 22nd, almost exactly three months ago.
I named him Tiga for the Malay word “three” because I thought his leg would have to be amputated. Luckily, he still has “Empat” legs, so he goes by Pat/Patrick. The wound still has not healed completely but that’s to be expected because the cut was really deep. He’s been neutered, dewormed, and has grown a lot (about 6 kg / 13 lbs). He was really mellow with Kenric and me even though I don’t think he remembers us.
The Sex Thing
Quite surprisingly, he likes to, and I quote Dr. Luiza Hyka, “do the sex thing”. Yes, he mounts other dogs, male and female, even after he’s been neutered. When he did it this evening, the doctors lifted him to prove that he was really neutered. It is not unusual considering he’s only about ten months old now.
After flushing out the huge tapeworms from his intestines, including one that was two feet long, his appetite is through the roof. He slurped up all the dry food we gave to him three times during our 90-minute visit, and then waited eagerly outside the kitchen area for dinner.
Thanks to the care and love from the wonderful team at Animal Veterinar Hospital, Tiga is a completely different puppy now. He and other friendly abandoned pups and kitties have really been given a new lease on life. He is so different that we have even started calling him Patrick. He’ll need more recovery time, but he’s come a long way since that late October day.
Warning: The last photo is graphic as it shows his wound back in October.
