While in Old Town Constanța, we visited the Edificiul Roman cu Mozaic. Constanța is the second largest city in Romania, and during the Roman times, it was a busy port. After giving us our tickets for 10 Romanian Lei each (USD $2.60 each), the ticket lady summoned the security guard to switch on the flood lights. Yes, Kenric and I were the only visitors, probably for the entire day.
The big building (the edificiul/edifice) itself is the museum. Most of the floor is covered in mosaic tiles. Two thousand years ago, it must have been bright and colorful. The walls are bare to the bricks, but in their heyday, they were covered in marble. We never found out what this big “edificiul” was used for. I just went to the website, and it says, “Pagina in constructie”.
A Cat at the Museum
We went outside to see the ruins and the footprints of the old bathhouse next to this building. “There’s a cat over there! Meow!”
The cat responded “Meeeeeoooooowwwwww!”
“Meow!”
“Meeeeeoooooowwwwww!”
The cat got up, and started walking towards where I was. Then, he leaped and jumped, and I realized he was serious. I ran down the stairs to meet him, and kept meowing so he knew where I was. We didn’t see him for a while and suddenly, “Meeeeeoooooowwwwww!”
Carry Cat Treats Everywhere
Kenric got the bag of cat treats out. Yes, we carry cat treats with us; may have to start carrying dog treats too. Surprise, Kenric! After a little cajoling, kitty came out from under the stairs to eat the treats. His first bite brought a totally different sound, a cross between “Meow” and “Wow”. When I tried pouring more, he rammed his head into the bag while purring. We had to open a new pack of treats. He ate a lot, and finally slowed down to ask for head scratching.
Ever since Kenric told me that my really inflamed bug bites recently were from playing with cats, I had tried to touch them as little as possible. After a few scratches, I stood up to leave, and kitty started kneading the hard pavement. That broke my heart.
What the heck, I just started scratching his head, neck and chin. He was purring so happily, he gave me a bite of approval. After a while, I gave him more treats to distract him, so that I could leave. He started looking for me without finishing the treats. He gave up, laid down, and started rolling left and right.
George Constanța
You may recall Constanța is actually pronounced Constantza. I named kitty George, after the Seinfeld character George Costanza. I left George a little fuller, and he left me a lot happier and sadder.
From the bottom of our hearts, Kenric and I thank Lokelani Kalani and her family for giving our scaredy cat, Oscar, a loving home and belly rubs.
