I started the morning by catching Pedja and Momo’s sibling. I was quite comforted that I managed to catch all three of Timid al Kotor’s babies even though we have failed to capture her all this while. We named him/her Inky, after the black cat that Kenric’s parents kept for only a few days because his Dad was allergic to it. This Inky was not happy with me this morning. Look at that angry snare in the photo.
When I delivered Inky to the vet, the vet saw the bite mark Pedja left on my now-swollen finger and suggested I go to the hospital for an anti-tetanus shot. His assistant was even more concerned, so they quickly took Inky and we jumped back into our waiting taxi. At the hospital, there’s a building specifically for foreigners. The nurse said I had to go to the Health Center in Dobrota instead. It’s the next town just a few minutes by taxi.
Registration was easy; Kenric showed the receptionist a photo of my passport on his phone. Within five minutes, we were brought to the waiting room outside the doctor’s office. An elderly man came out from one of the rooms and was eager to chat with us, but my doctor was ready for us.
Tetanus shot and antibiotics
The doctor asked me to confirm that it was my name on her computer screen, and asked what I was there for. I showed her my finger and said, “I was bitten by a cat.” She asked how long ago that was. “Saturday night.” It didn’t seem to concern her that 45 hours had passed. She said I needed an anti-tetanus shot and antibiotics.
“Any allergies?”
“Amoxicillin.”
“OK, this antibiotics, two pills the first day and one pill for three more days.” Her handwriting is not the typical doctor’s chicken scratch. She proceeded to enter notes into my electronic medical record. I asked if I should get a rabies shot. She said no.
She looked up and asked, “What were you doing with the cat?” “To catch her for sterilization.” She smiled and nodded. I knew I was in good hands. I was happy for the child who drew the paintings displayed in her office. He/She has a good “Mamu”.
About $50 and 25 minutes
We paid €47,39 (USD $52.74) by credit card and were then brought to the nurse’s station. One of them got up and brought us into a room and told me that the vaccine injection will be in my…. “Arm?” “Yes, your arm.” It wasn’t pleasant, but it didn’t hurt too much. Then, she told me I also needed a shot of serum in the butt. I thought, “All these for about fifty bucks?”
We were out of the health center within 25 minutes of entering. At the pharmacy near our Airbnb, Kenric was really confused by the cashier. He finally realized the five antibiotic pills really did cost €0,56 (USD $0.62)!
