After taking Grandpa’s car for a smog test, Kenric and I drove out of town with no destination in mind. Yeah, we both have a severe case of cabin fever. Within minutes, the light rain, green mountains and faraway patches of wildflowers were already soothing our souls. Unbeknownst to us, we were entering San Bernardino National Forest. We had no clue there is a national forest so close by. We turned around after another ten minutes as the rain got heavier. While pulling in to a gas station, we even saw a rainbow!
I asked Kenric if he thought Grandpa had been to this area. He said Grandpa would have been all over these mountains for work. Grandpa worked for the phone company and went all over this region to install (and repair) telephone lines. He climbed a lot of telephone poles as there weren’t many phone lines yet shortly after World War II. Driving to new places especially through the mountains and canyons was his favorite. I have always known where Kenric got his love for driving and the mountains.
