Sam Poh Tong
We went to one of Ipoh’s most famous attractions called Sam Poh Tong (三寶洞) with my cousin sister’s two sons (my nephews). I’m so glad my cousin trusted Kenric and me with the boys. Sam Poh Tong is a Chinese Buddhist temple in a limestone cave. When we stopped at the fish pond outside the temple, the boys saw some fish feed that fell by the side and picked them up to feed the fish. I love their resourcefulness!
We bought two little containers of cucumbers to feed the turtles in the turtle pond. There used to be many monkeys near the turtle pond that practically flew down from the side of the hill to snatch whatever they could from visitors. There weren’t any at all today. When my younger nephew asked why and where the monkeys are now, the lady who sells prayer products simply said, “We don’t let them down here anymore” and avoided elaborating. We bought some prayer products from the lady and burnt them for my father whose ashes are in the columbarium building, and lit some candles and jotsticks (incense sticks).
Ipoh Parade
We brought the boys to the food court at Ipoh Parade. This mall is really popular with Kenric and me because there’s a store in the basement that sells wine. I ran into another cousin at the food court, and we got to meet her boyfriend who just arrived this morning from Kuala Lumpur. He’s a little shy, but wonderful. We left the lovebirds alone. A lion dance performance started and we watched it with the boys. After lunch, they picked out a manga (comic) book and refused all other toys as gifts. They are just such cute and well-behaved boys!
Famous Buntong Bean Sprouts
Later in the evening we met my sister’s son and his friends for dinner. One of them is visiting from Thailand. We made a change to the dinner plan and brought them to eat at our very famous Buntong Bean Sprouts Chicken restaurant. A few of the waitresses remember me and said Kenric is “very handsome”. ?
Talking to my nephew about business planning is yet another new experience. Kids grow up so fast. The wait was very long, but based on the feedback from around the table, especially from our Thai guest, I’d say it was worth it. I said hi to the owner and told her I have missed her food for 22 years. I’m sure she hears that all the time. Kenric and I leave Ipoh the day after tomorrow. We will miss Ipoh very much.
