It’s been a good two days. Kenric’s aunt and uncle are here from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They are making good progress helping Grandma sort through her belongings. It is of course a difficult process on Grandma because everything has a history, but she’s being as objective as possible.
A few days ago, she cut out a recipe for Bourbon-Roasted Pork Loin. When I saw “Bourbon”, I wondered for whom she was saving the recipe. To our surprise, she was interested in trying it. It’s a surprise to us because this is a “semi-dry” household, and because the recipe calls for Sriracha hot sauce! Luckily, this Asian has a bottle of that in the kitchen.
Grandma’s first bourbon
When we brought a bottle of Knob Creek Bourbon home a few days ago, Grandma joked that her daughters would be wondering what happened to their mother. It was funny to see this 93-year-old lady holding a bottle of bourbon, maybe even for the very first time. Kenric and I decided to make the pork recipe for what would have been Grandma and Grandpa’s 71st wedding anniversary (today, January 17th). We had told Grandma that we would “make it for Thursday because it’s a special day.” She smiled and nodded.
Today, Grandpa’s home health aide for about two years visited. She’s a very nice lady, and the three of them got along very well. Grandma has been encouraging her to find a job that will utilize her piano and music skills. She said she got a new job playing the piano just before she visited this morning. She was elated, so were all of us, especially Grandma.
While Kenric’s aunt and uncle were out running errands today, we baked Bran Muffins, cookies, and prepped the pork loin for dinner. You may recall how Kenric and I heedlessly made enough batter for 60 bran muffins just because we didn’t want to waste the leftover buttermilk. It actually yielded more than 80. Ironically, we ate the very last one the morning his aunt and uncle arrived. But that’s OK, because they still haven’t commented on how clean the kitchen counter tiles are, like Aunt Mary Lu said they would. Ahem!
It’s still our anniversary
When Grandma was checking in on us in the kitchen, I told her, “I don’t know if it’s the right thing to say, but Happy Anniversary.” She said she wondered about that too. “Even though there’s only one of us left, it’s still our anniversary.” Dinner turned out great. She must have liked the Bourbon flavor because she said that bottle of bourbon meant many more such recipes. Kenric said his Bourbon recipe requires only one cube of ice. Kenric’s parents made some delicious Bourbon sweet potatoes when we visited, so we’ll make that soon.
After dinner, she thanked Kenric and me for making it a special dinner. You’re very welcome, Grandma. And don’t worry, all the alcohol has been cooked out!
It’s also been a good two days because our GoFundMe campaign is now at 88% of our goal (up from 75%). We give our sincere thanks to everyone who donated. Again, on behalf of Danijela and the Kotor cats, thank you very mačka! I update Danijela each night and she is very thankful for the help.
