We arrived in Ipoh on Saturday evening but hid that from everyone except for a few cousins and my sister. That’s because we wanted to surprise my uncle at his birthday dinner on Sunday night. He was very surprised to see us at the restaurant. The first thing he said was (translated), “You were just swimming in Thailand!” That’s why I didn’t even mention on Facebook that we’re back in Malaysia.
It was a wonderful dinner and lucky for us, my uncle brought a bottle of Cognac that he has had for more than 40 years. So damn smooth. Kenric and I have never tasted 18-year-old Macallan Scotch, but we hope our little bottle birthday gift is up to my uncle’s standard.
Kenric got a Godson!
Kenric symbolically got a godson! He’s the younger of my cousin sister’s two sons. If possible, Kenric would love to have them both as godsons but the older one was a little shy today; it took him a day or two to warm up to us the last time too. Kenric and the boys have always been fond of one another.
Yesterday, my other cousin teased the little one that he should just make Kenric his godfather since he likes Kenric so much. Whoa! That made Kenric so happy. So, there was an ad hoc tea ceremony where the little one was coaxed into presenting Kenric with Cognac on the rocks instead of Chinese tea. It’s official! Kenric has godson; symbolically. Maybe he’ll make it official with both the brothers with an official ceremony that will involve tea and probably a visit to the temple. Regardless, we already love them to pieces.
The Indoor Pool is a Big Hit
After dinner, we went to my cousin’s house for birthday cake. They have an indoor kiddie pool. Somebody will have to mop up the water, but it’s actually pretty awesome; protected from the scorching sun during the day and from mosquitoes at night. It’s a big hit with the kids!
My uncle’s Chinese zodiac animal is the rat, so the cake was a rat. After singing two versions of birthday songs in Chinese, my little cousin started the English version so Kenric could sing along. Then, everyone asked the birthday boy to make a wish. He wished out loud (translated), “Everyone in the world has food and jobs, and no wars.” That brought me to tears.
