Yesterday, I mentioned we would drive 2.5 hours today to visit a cave. We woke up late, so we took the shorter and less scenic route to Škocjanske jame (The Škocjan Caves). It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a very huge cave with lots of stalactites, stalagmites and big chambers; the biggest one is 140 meters (459 ft.) high. The main attraction for us is the big river that gushes through the dark cave. In winter, the river is higher than normal. No photography is allowed inside the cave. If you’re interested, check out the amazing photos on their website.
The tour took about 1.5 hours. Our tour guide was really cool. I asked her if she cried the first time she saw the river because I was tearing up uncontrollably. She didn’t. In Slovenian, river is reka. Somehow, the river’s name is also Reka, so it’s Reka Reka (River River). A man with whom we chatted briefly in the parking lot when we arrived described his experience as being in the Grand Canyon but inside a cave. After the tour, we walked part of the self-guided Educational Trail until it was too cold to continue.
Winter Fairytale Christmas Market
Back in Bled, the Winter Fairytale event (Christmas market) began late this afternoon. The singer on stage was singing in Slovenian to the tune of John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Road. We had gluhwein and shared a surprisingly good hotdog topped with relish, sweet mayo and sauerkraut. Locals were selling their arts and crafts. Kenric helped me pick out a winter hat, and since it’s been so cold, we may go back tomorrow to get him one.
