This is one of my utmost favorite photos. It was taken in Alaska last August (2019) along the Dalton Highway aka The Haul Road; popularized by the TV show Ice Roads Truckers.
Mountains as far as the eye can see, the little patch of snow, the green and yellow grass, the purple flowers, and that lone caribou were visually perfect to me. But, the caribou was on a manmade road probably built to facilitate oil drilling, snow was melting much faster, several places in Alaska within the Arctic Circle had forest fires for the first time last year, and while the caribou population has started to increase after years of conservation efforts, their habitat is threatened by climate change. I was overcome with sadness. Today is Earth Day.
