We’ve been giving hotdogs to the homeless dogs that hang out along Bulevardi Republika, a pedestrian-only boulevard which is also where we have our dinners. All the homeless dogs, and there are many, are friendly and good-natured. One in particular always knows to stop by our table; we sat at the same table three evenings in a row but the pup also recognizes us anywhere.
The first evening, after we ran out of hotdogs, I opened a small pouch of wet cat food for her. She was still looking at Kenric hoping for more hotdogs and didn’t follow me across the boulevard to where I could pour the cat food. So, I waved the pouch near her snout. Once she got a whiff, she started jumping, begging and pranced across the way. She ate it up within seconds, and later walked us back to our hotel.
Since then, every time she sees us she jumps on her hind legs and follows us. This morning, after two hotdogs, she walked with us almost all the way to the castle about 40 minutes away. While we waited to cross a busy street, she walked ahead and traffic stopped. Follow the locals! She turned around when the dogs near the castle kept barking at her.
I named her Jumpy but spell it Jampi which is the Malay word for “spell” as in “magic spell.” Jampi is such a sweet girl Kenric and I are definitely under her spell. She’s the best thing that has happened to us in Berat. She ate six hotdogs tonight, so did her friend. We wish there was a vet nearby that we could lead her to with hotdogs to get her spayed.
